There is an amount of representation of marginalized groups in When We Were Magic that’s worth talking about. Don’t get me wrong, I was super happy for the couple, but I just thought the journey there would’ve been a bit more full of fireworks. He’s dead, and you killed him! She has magic that can help make her life easier and can even kill a boy accidentally. I knew I’d love it because of the magic. No one among the friend group says at any point, ‘this is so, so messed up’, or profoundly acknowledges that they are doing something that could be considered morally horrifying. We might excuse her actions by saying she thinks for most of the book that there was a chance he could be brought back; once that hope is taken away, nothing changes, however. I couldn't put it down! When her close friends reassure her and even lecture her about how she should trust them to take her weight if she falls, it’s important messaging in a YA book. How the romance is handled, the representation, the friendships: it’s all so theoretically enjoyable. As I made headway through the book, I had the sense that the author wanted a murder for the shock factor at the start, but wanted to write the rest of the book about friendship and self-sacrifice and teenage evolution, and not the murder. But maybe that’s just me being nosey. We got to learn about each of their personalities and who they really were as well as their different styles of magic they possessed. This is fantasy at its best: weird and normal and human and alien and wonderfully engaging. It was refreshing in so many ways, it took teens with magic to a whole new level. The slow-burn in this one is oh, so sweet. But this book is about so much more than magic. When something bad happens, the enjoyment for me is in seeing the characters grapple with it. We got to learn how each of them favored a different side of the magic, whether it be learning about new spells or dealing with nature.
